Makrigialos, East Crete, Greece

Makrigialos on the South East coast of  Lasithi province in  Crete and the surrounding area offer so much to the discerning tourist, from the original fishing village to the recent 5star Mikri Poli hotel or the more established Sunwing Resort Hotel and Villea Village or the famous Aspros Potamos Cottages, this area has accommodation for everyone.

The beaches start from Galini in the west through Mavros Kolimbos, Koutsouras, Kalamochania, the Harbor beach, and the Long Beach which gives the area it’s name. Continuing east from Diaskari and Lagada beaches are a host of small coves leading out past the Moni Kapsa monastery and on to the large sheltered cove of Amouthi, Sun & Sea Lovers are spoilt for choice.

From the coast with it’s wide range of accommodation the more adventurous can visit the mountain villages which surround the area, from Shinokapsala and Orino, along the mountain roads to Stavrochori, Agios Stefanos, Pefki, and on to Lithines. The villages provide a wealth of material for the artist or photographer, especially if you are lucky enough to visit on one of the Saints Days which give rise to local festivals. Makrigialos is also home to the Casa del Mezzo music festival in June each year.   Within the area there are opportunities to see many extensive Archeological remains, Minoan, Roman, and even Venetian, and the local Museums in Sitia and Ierapetra have many interesting exhibits, (never visit on Monday).

There are also eco-tourist activities such as walking tours which give the opportunity to visit some of the spectacular gorges in the area these provide the photographer with some truly amazing opportunities, some of the Flora & Fauna being unique to the island of Crete. Our area is home to some of the worlds best Olive Oil which is the basis for a diet acknowledged as one of the healthiest in the world. You can also enjoy a wide range of restaurants, tavernas, and cafes in and around the area.

It is also possible to visit the uninhabited islands of Koufonisi and Chrissi by boat from Makrigialos and Ierapetra.

For the mildest climate and most days of sun, in one of the most natural areas in Europe the South Coast of Crete may be the place for you.
